Pit on Parade - Raffle - #PitonParade 2020
December 07, 2020Right Folks! Before we get into the raffle and how to enter, let’s chat a little about this years epic event!
I just want to once again say a really big thank you for the support on this project. Whether you donated scenery at the beginning, converted and painted one of the amazing miniatures or just shouted support at us from the side-lines, I want to extend that thanks again!
Let’s not forget Gav Thorpe’s story. I know Gav has multiple deadlines on any given day of the week, so the fact that he went to the effort of taking Andy of the Aett’s background concept and weaving it into a short story is very much appreciated. Thanks Gav!
So many people have said the board is cool, but the board is just a backdrop for the characters that inhabit it. That Pit Master on his throne, those drunken orks, that dude getting his face mashed in the pit… there are so many cool stories going on that I can’t single out any particular individual.
The Board
Building the board was fun, stressful, fulfilling and challenging in equal measure. I’m an engineer and I love building scenery for my miniatures, so I’ve really enjoyed this. Having the sheer range of scenery kits donated as well as the Necromunda kits I spent about £200 on myself meant that the board is a massive, cohesive miss-mash of themes that somehow come together. Just like the eclectic range of minis, somehow, despite the differences in styles, everything seems to come together. I honestly don’t want to let this go now! Haha
Towards the end it did become a bit of a slog, I didn’t want to rush it but I was running out of time… then as the miniatures started arriving it spurred me on. I didn’t want to let you guys down after I’d cajoled you into donating minis….
The board HAD to be finished! And it was!
The Sequel
So, what was Pit on Parade all about?
Last year I wanted to fulfil a childhood dream of running a 40k Campaign. Andy of the Aett and Pandora’s Bitsbox very kindly supported me in doing that and it turned out to be amazing. Way more people turned up than I thought actually would, and although I think we were all tired after that, I’d say it was a success.

This year we wanted to do “Purge the Pit 2: Electric Boogaloo” but COVID put an end to that, so I thought of doing something for Armies on Parade instead, hence #PitOnParade
How to enter
So now it’s your chance to win this fantastic piece! How do I do that?!?! - you may ask…
I’ve been looking at ways to maximise the amount we can give to charity. I figured that in the current uncertain times, a straight up auction may preclude a lot of people from the chance of bidding at auction, so a raffle would be the best bet. If we raffle it though, we either have to get a games licence in the UK or use a 3rd party company that can take anywhere up to 30% of the money! So my proposal is that if you want to enter, you donate straight to the charity and then send me a DM (@dave_the_dr) or email (dave_gent@outlook.com) with a screen shot of your donation and for every £2 donated you get a ticket. I will then get a special guest to draw a name from the hat at the end of December.
Whilst I thank people from all over the globe for sending miniatures in (from New Zealand to New York and everywhere in between!!) I think I am being realistic in saying that the raffle is only open to those in the UK. It is likely to cost a significant amount of money to send this thing overseas right now (but you know, if you are outside the UK and you would be happy to pay shipping, please enter!). So, with that in mind, due to the size of the beast, I will personally deliver this to the winner’s door whilst I’m out about for work.
Making a difference
The two charities I have selected are:
I think if there is one common point of discussion in the community outside of painting tiny plastic space dolls, it is our mental health and making sure we look after each other. Many of us use the hobby as our method of escaping the madness of the real world and 2020 has really tested that I think. I’ve personally benefitted from some mental health therapy sessions. If you have anxiety and have never been to a CBT session, go try it, it will change your life.
This one is far more personal and is the local charity for supporting disadvantaged youth in Nottingham which I will be personally supporting over the next 12 months. I wish we had services like this when I was a kid. There’s a lot of talk about ‘privilege’ these days but we were all equally underprivileged where I grew up, and perhaps services like this back in the 1980’s and early 90’s might have meant more of my childhood friends got to reach their potential. Maybe I wouldn’t have needed that CBT session in the first place…
So whichever of those two charities floats your boat, go and donate over the next couple of weeks and send me your screenshots!
Again, thank you for all of your support this year!
